I read with a sinking heart the latest antics of our district council as expressed in recent letters. The many letters commenting on the farcical rubbish collection system dreamed up by Kennet officers express the despair of those on whom it is imposed.

Councillor Chris Humphries' statement on the subject exemplifies the council's attitude to its ratepayers. In reply to the Winterbourne residents and all who have removed the bugging device from their bins, he immediately resorts to threats of prosecution. What is wrong with listening and discussing?

It is in the nature of those who bully to target a minority. Take these gadgets off, play ducks and drakes on the River Kennet with them, prop up a leg on a wobbly piece of furniture, or send them back whence they came. It is only through protest that bullying is rendered impotent.

Mr Ivens' comments (September 14) on our new approach signs to Marlborough are apposite. Large red notices warning of parking restrictions are a subliminal message to potential visitors to stay away or risk ordeal by traffic warden.

By contrast, Salisbury City Council has erected notices on all approaches to the city which inform the motorist of the number of parking spaces available . Welcome to Salisbury is the implicit message here.

Lastly, I would like to support Nick Baxter in his suggestion last week that we lobby our MP to abolish Kennet District Council. Borough and Rural District Councils worked well and closely followed the mood of those they served. Marlborough should assert itself and seek to run its own affairs.

M Gray.
