SINGER Gabby Young is back on track to record her second album after taking time out at her Hilmarton home when she was diagnosed with cancer.

The 22-year-old was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last month after finding a lump on her throat.

After doctors examined the lump, she was rushed into Ridgeway Hospital in Swindon where she stayed for four days while surgeons removed her thyroid.

She has been recuperating at her home in Hilmarton where she lives with mum Judy and dad Edward.

The singer was told that if she went ahead with the surgery she could lose her voice forever.

However Miss Young performed her first gig since the operation at Swindon's Brunel Rooms on Thursday.

Despite losing some of her range because of the cancer the singer/songwriter said she couldn't feel healthier.

She said: "It has been a whirlwind of activity over the last month.

"All I can remember was rubbing my throat because it was sore and feeling this strange lump.

"I'm only 22 so the first thought in my mind wasn't cancer but I am glad I got it checked out."

Miss Young, who supported New Zealand singer Bic Runga during the gig, said: "It was a tremendous confidence boost to support Bic Runga as I am a fan of hers.

"I am thrilled to be singing again publicly since having my thyroid removed.

"I felt more nervous than I have in a very long time but the audience soon put an end to that.

"I had to cut a few songs because I just wouldn't have been able to reach the high notes but on some of the sounds I hit the top key so I'm hoping to improve."

"I have had the most amazing support from my friends and family.

"They have been truly wonderful and, if it has done anything, the cancer has certainly made me realise I must take more time with loved ones."

Miss Young will undergo radiotherapy next month which will see her isolated in a sterile room for four days.

She added: "There is still a long way to go with the cancer and treatment but I'm just ready to get back with singing which is what I do best.

"I have been really inspired by all the love and support from everyone. It has been a crazy few weeks."
