A new after-school German club for bilingual primary school-aged children is starting up in Calne.

German teacher Angelika Davey has been running a club in Frome, Somerset, for the past four years and is now expanding into Wiltshire.

Devizes-based Mrs Davey, who is from Lower Saxony in the north of Germany, said: “At the moment we have a few children signed up, enough to start a class, but we would love to hear from anyone else who is interested.

“In our Frome class, which we have run for four years, the children are all bilingual German speakers with one parent at home who is a German speaker and wants the child to learn the language. We also have one child whose parents are both English speakers but their child is a fluent German speaker.”

The German club is quite informal and not too structured for the children.

Mrs Davey, who has lived in England for almost 30 years and has been teaching German for more than 20 of those, said: “It is an after-school club so the children will have been at school all day already.

“I think if I tried to make it to formal they would probably tell me to get lost!

“Of course there are times when I need to do some teaching but there are lots of games and a lot of singing, all of which incorporates German.”

The classes run every Wednesday at Fynamore Primary School from 4pm to 5pm.
