A MAN was rescued from his Malmesbury flat by firefighters in the early hours of Friday morning.

Wiltshire fire crews were called to Gloucester Street at 12.18am after the alarm was raised by a neighbour. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the first floor flat and found the occupant unconscious on the living room floor, while a fire raged in the kitchen.

It is believed that the man had come home after a night out and started to cook himself something to eat.

The fire started after the cooker was left unattended – in the meantime, the man had fallen asleep in the other room.

Although the flat was fitted with smoke detectors, the batteries had been removed.
