Corsham town councillors have thrown their weight behind a campaign to stop parents parking dangerously when dropping their children off at Corsham Primary School.
Coun Michael Simpkins is a taxi driver in the town and often sees parents parking on the double yellow lines on the roads near the school’s Pound Mead site.
Coun Simpkins said: “There are double yellow lines on the entrance and exit road. These serve a useful purpose of allowing two-way traffic.
“For some time there have been flagrant breaches of traffic law at Corsham Primary School by parents parking illegally and causing a danger to pedestrians.”
Coun Peter Davis has called for parents to be more aware of the dangers of blocking the road.
One of the issues raised is that when a car blocks pavements or parks on the yellow lines, people with pushchairs and wheelchairs have to walk into the road and face traffic.
Coun Davis said: “Unless parents are prepared to accept collective responsibility for improving these dangerous situations – which occur regularly twice a day – the result will inevitably be a serious tragedy.”
Recently, Corsham Primary School sent newsletters home, asking parents to park sensibly, and they have also upped a daily staff presence outside the school.
Councillors have called for the police to have a presence at the school. This will be assessed when the new school term starts in the autumn.
