Chirton Primary School pupils wound up their busy academic year last Wednesday with a carnival parade around the village.

The youngsters made their own costumes and banners for the procession, which drew in the whole community.

Headteacher Kate Lloyd Jones said: “Lots of people came to their gates to wave and wish the children a happy holiday.

“The children just ignored the rain. They played whistles and other instruments and made a wonderful noise as they went along.

“That’s the great thing about children – they’re washable.”

She added: “The school topic this term has been carnival and we have studied all aspects of it. And you can’t study carnival without having one, can you?”

The school has taken part in Devizes Carnival in previous years but unfortunately the parent who used to organise the school’s entry has moved away and no one else has come forward.
