Battles from ancient times up to modern day were played at Attack!, the annual show of Devizes and District Wargames Group.

The show, in its 32nd year, has a good following, and attractis regulars and new visitors.

Held at Devizes School over the weekend, more than 700 people attended.

Such is the dedication of wargamers that some arrange trips to the UK around the show, including a man from Australia and another from Cyprus.

Visitors saw and were able to take part in battles fought across the table top with accurately painted figures representing the armies of historical times and colourful depictions of warriors of the future in the Warhammer 40K worlds.

More than 120 competitors played in six competitions and more than 30 traders attended.

The demonstration games included a group from Sheffield who recreated the Battle of Arles, part of the Roman Civil War, a group from Portsmouth used 6mm figures to play the Seven Years War between Prussia and Russia in the 1750s while a modern skirmish based on the Iraq War of 2003 was also played.

Phil Mackie, secretary of the wargames group, said: “We had a good attendance and it was up on last year. Our competitors are regulars, but the show pulls people in from far and wide.

“We had some young people who were there for the first time and even people living in Devizes who hadn’t been before. We also had visitors from as far away as Cornwall, Nottingham, Blackpool and Durham.

“Wargaming does seem to be increasing. Once upon a time it was a small group of people. At our early shows you would have between 80 and 100 people attending, now we have several hundred.”

A raffle at the show raised £320 for The Veterans Association, a military service charity.
