Classics 40s and 50s Austin cars rolled into town on Saturday as the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum hosted the Austin Counties annual rally.

More than 60 cars were on display, including Austin Hampshires, Herefords and a number of rare A40 Sports. The club’s annual show drew hundreds of members and onlookers.

Michael Bennett, director of the museum, said: “It was quite a sight, having around 60 of them here. And we host quite a few rallies for clubs.

“I was surprised at how many Austin club members there were. I was shocked when they told me there were more than 12,000 people involved worldwide.

“There were people from all over the country here, as well as one guy from France, who brought his A40 Sport.

“The main draw was probably the A40s because there are not too many of those about these days.”

The show was one of many being held at the museum this summer, which has already seen Mini shows and its own annual rally, which drew more than 300 cars.

The museum also received a boost recently when it sold its prized AEC Bowser, a tanker used to refuel the Dam Busters during World War Two, for £17,500.

It was purchased by a film company that is remaking the Dam Busters film, which will be directed by Peter Jackson.

Mr Bennett said: “We aren’t entirely sure where the bowser has ended up. I spoke to someone in Lincolnshire, who owns a Lancaster Bomber, and they said there is a possibility it’s gone up there to be shot for the film.

“We have already started using the money to improve the museum. We have moved things around a bit and grouped the cars together. We have had some really positive comments.”

The next event at the museum is a micro club car rally on September 2, 3 and 4.
