More than 100 new homes are to be built on a controversial site in Calne after builder Redrow bought land around Sandpit Road.

The land already has outline planning permission for housing on the land which lies close to Virador’s landfill site.

It is part of a site on which developer Robert Hitchins Ltd won planning permission for 350 homes.

The application was bitterly fought by the community group Save Calne Marsh and Wiltshire Council.

Robert Hitchins was granted planning permission on appeal and a later High Court bid by Wiltshire Council to quash the planning permission ended in failure.

Redrow plans to build 92 homes ranging from two-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom family homes. It may also build a further 40 affordable homes.

As part of the planning process, Redrow is to contribute £250,000 into local education, £100,000 to improve Anchor Road community park and up to £100,000 to upgrade pedestrian and cycle facilities around the site.

The developer may also implement traffic-calming measures along Oxford Road.

Lee Hawker, land director for Redrow Homes (South West), said the development would be sensitive to the greenfield location.

Wiltshire councillor Howard Marshall said: “We have objected to this on a number of grounds but clearly the inspector disagreed, and so we must get on with it.

“The battle has already been lost, and it is just a matter of time until these houses are built.”

Phillip Wrenn of Save Calne Marsh said the group remains opposed to the development. He said no provision had been made for medical services, shops or schools.
