Wootton Bassett High Street was blocked last night while several fire crews tackled a house blaze.

Wiltshire Fire and Rescue received a call at about 8pm after a small fire had started in a bedroom on the first floor of a two-storey house.

A crew from Wootton Bassett, two from Swindon, a control unit from Stratton and an aerial appliance from Swindon attended the incident.

Firefighters put out the blaze and ventilated the home. The family, who were at home at the time, were unharmed.

The fire brigade says that part of the A3102 was closed off for 30 minutes, although Enam Chowdhury, owner of The Ganges Indian Restaurant on the High Street claims the road was blocked for two hours.

He said that the closure had been bad for his High Street business.

“A lot of people couldn’t get to me” he said.

“The firemen have a job to do but it wasn’t necessary for the road to be blocked for that long; it wasn’t a big fire.”
