Plans to put Corsham on the tourism map have been unveiled.

Town councillors are hopeful that they can recreate the success of Lacock, which was last week named by travel website TripAdvisor in a list of the fastest growing up-and-coming tourist hotspots as the latest ‘must visit’ destination.

A public meeting is due to be held on November 2 to bring together pub owners, hoteliers, sports clubs and representatives from attractions such as Corsham Court and the almshouses to discuss how everyone can work together to attract more people to the town.

The plans were buoyed by the news last week that the Corsham Tourist Information Centre has had its funding extended until March next year by Wiltshire Council, despite the massive budget cuts the council is facing.

The centre, which has just greeted its 100,000th visitor, celebrated its tenth anniversary last week with a visit by Lord Lansdowne and the former Corsham town council chairman Roger Fido, both of whom opened the centre ten years ago.

Martin Still, owner of the Methuen Arms, which is due to reopen in November after a massive renovation project, said: “The Methuen Arms is a central focal point in the town and it is more of a boutique inn, which is something that Corsham doesn’t already have.”

Agent Sarah Eastel, who brought the Harry Potter filming to Lacock, has been enlisted to do the same for Corsham. She said: “Filming could benefit the community in many ways, whether it be production crew looking for a spare prop or the catering crew who have run out of carrots. They all need a place to stay too.”

Dawn McHugh, landlady at the Flemish Weaver, in the High Street, said: “We get a lot of walkers in here but it would be nice to see more people come here for longer stays.”
