Organisers of Sherston Mangold Hurl have put out a nationwide plea for more of the root vegtables after a poor season has resulted in a drastic shortage.

Growers in the village have produced only 30 roots but the organisers want 300 for the competition this weekend.

Now a plea has gone out to farmers’ unions in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and the campaign reached Radio 4 listeners after Mr Rea was interviewed on Farming Today on Tuesday.

The poor harvest has resulted from a combination of the village’s main grower suffering from serious illness and extended dry weather, causing splitting and shrinkage of the roots.

Acting chairman of the Order of Sherston Mangold Hurlers Martin Rea said everything would be done to avoid using swede substitutes instead of the Yellow Eckendorf Mangolds.

“Already the Scottish NFU is emailing its members for assistance with NFU Cymru asking its county officers for sources of supply,” he said.

“Whilst mangolds were once a common crop all over the country they are now rarely grown at all.

“If anyone knows of a supply of mangolds which may be available please let us know as soon as possible.

“We have a team of members ready to collect from anywhere in the United Kingdom or Eire at a moment’s notice.”

The hurl will take place on Sunday in the village hall field from noon till 6pm. Music, stalls, barbecue, bar and afternoon teas are also available.

Entry per team of three is £5, with individual entry £1. There will also be a free children’s hurl. To enter, call (01666) 840694. To offer mangolds, call 07887 814843.
