Derry Hill couple Tom and Maureen Lewis, who are celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday, say there is no secret to their lasting marriage.
Mr and Mrs Lewis, of Wycombe Close, moved to Calne from London in 2000.
Mrs Lewis said: “The secret to a happy marriage is that there is no secret.”
“It was fate that we ended up here in Derry Hill,” said Mrs Lewis. “We were thinking of moving to a town near Cambridge but our son-in-law, who works for the MoD, was posted to Bath and decided to move to the area. We came to see it and just fell in love. It’s like a bit of heaven.”
The couple were married in Edmonton when Mr Lewis was 22 and Mrs Lewis was 21. They met at the wedding of Mr Lewis’s brother two years previously.
Mrs Lewis said: “I was working making underwear for Marks & Spencer when we met.”
Mr Lewis, who was born in Tottenham, had just finished his national service when they met.
“I can’t believe it’s our 50th wedding anniversary already, it’s come so quickly,” he said.
The couple have four children aged between 37 and 46, and three grandchildren.
