Pupils at Cherhill School are in fine voice after their choir won an award in a national singing scheme.

The village primary school won a Sing Up award, organised by Youth Music, the UK’s largest children’s music charity.

Pupils and teachers took the silver award for promoting music within the school.

Deputy headteacher Helen Williams said: “The children here sing all the time.

“It makes me feel quite emotional when I hear them because they’ve got lovely voices.

“It really means a lot to us to have this award and we’re committed to working towards the gold and platinum awards.”

The school’s choir also took home a silver trophy from Wootton Bassett Music Festival for the best primary school choir this summer.

“We are just really proud of our singing,” said Mrs Williams.

Last Sunday pupils took a tour of the world while sitting in their classrooms for the European Day of Languages.

They dressed as if they were going on a journey, and were escorted around the world by older pupils acting as tour guides who stamped their passports as they visited destinations on White Horse Airlines.

Headteacher Terry Hall had a flight attendant uniform and language co-ordinator Katie Keeping wore a pilot’s hat.

Ms Keeping said: “We made the hall a departures hall and all the children took off from there.

“It was a great day and we’re very much hoping to do it again next year.”

The children were encouraged to speak French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Welsh and Japanese.

Ms Keeping said: “We mixed up the groups so there were children from Year 6 working alongside children from Reception year, which was lovely.”
