THE Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp is undoubtedly the highlight of this weekend’s racing.

The richest turf race in the world gets underway on Sunday and has attracted its usual top class field, headed by favourite Behkabad and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Fame and Glory, as well as Workforce, from the Newmarket yard of Sir Michael Stoute.

With stable jockey Johnny Murtagh on board Fame and Glory, the Ballydoyle trainer has called upon the services of Christophe Soumillon to ride his other leading fancy Cape Blanco.

French trainer Andre Fabre, the most successful trainer in the race’s history, has supplemented dual Classic winner Lope De Vega to add to the competitive flavour of the event.

West Ilsley trainer Mick Channon has another shot at the race with Youmzain, who has picked up a considerable amount of prize money in the race over the years.

However, although Planteur, at around about 7/1, has been beaten by the favourite on the last couple of occasions, connections believe the softer underfoot conditions could suit their charge and he is the column’s tentative selection.

Pick of the Saturday racing is at Newmarket where their feature race is the Group 1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes for fillies and mares over a mile.

The favourite is the French trained Sahpresa, who bids to become the first horse since 1985 to win the race in successive years.

Opposition includes the Channon-trained Music Show, winner of the Falmouth Stakes plus last season’s placed horses Strawberrydaiquiri and Spacious.

The Henry Cecil-trained Aviate has a good chance but the selection is for the Luca Cumani-trained Seta, the mount of Kieran Fallon.

A tentative each way selection for the tricky to callhe totesport.com Cambridgeshire goes to the Beckhampton-trained Proponent, the mount of champion jockey Ryan Moore.

The meeting gets underway with the first of four races televised by Channel 4, a two year old Fillies race over seven furlongs, that could go to Khor Sheed, the mount of Fallon, who could also take a hand in the following race, on board Fury for trainer William Haggas.

Other meetings are at Redcar and Epsom and a jumping card at Fontwell with Wolverhampton’s evening floodlit meeting starting at 6pm.
