Devizes born composer Simon May has been commissioned to write a special theme for Peggy Mitchell in advance of the last episode of EastEnders featuring the popular character.

Actress Barbara Windsor, who plays the pushy pub landlady in the long-running soap, is due to leave the cast next month and Mr May has written a piece of music for her final episode, which will only be available to download after the episode has been aired.

Mr May, who composed the EastEnders theme tune, said: “Of course, it is all top secret at the moment. I’m not even allowed to say when the episode is going out. But I am very pleased with the way the theme has worked out.”

The theme will feature on Mr May’s latest album, due out next month. The Simon May Collection, as it is called, also includes his themes for Howard’s Way, Trainer, Eldorado, as well as the various pieces of music he has written for EastEnders.

His number one hit, Summer of My Life, is also on the album.

Mr May will be playing numbers from the collection when he appears in a concert at the Corn Exchange in Devizes on September 22, alongside 60s legends Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich.

Mr May said: “I am really looking forward to coming to Devizes. It will be coming full circle for me as I have fond memories of practising my scales in Station Road when I was a child.”
