IT was with deep regret I read that the leader of the council who, in the past, has seemed to back Swindon, now seems happy to cause local people to be made redundant as he proposes to establish a 24-hour call centre out of the borough.

On the one hand he wants Swindon to be out of the South West Regional Council as he wants control in Swindon, then he is happy to send jobs out of the borough.

What message is it to businesses moving to Swindon that its own council moves business out of it?

A Swindon Borough Council call centre based out of the borough does not inspire confidence.

Readers who have dealt with call centres out of this country will no doubt not have great confidence in the information passed on by them.

Likewise, having a call centre based out of Swindon, staffed by people who do not know Swindon, does not inspire confidence.

Let's have a call centre in Swindon, operated by people who know about Swindon.

Rather than waste money on redundancy, let us use it to support Swindon.

How many more jobs will this council move out of this borough?
