In your coverage of the VJ ceremony which took place at Marlborough on Sunday August 14, it was noted that traffic continued to run unhindered during the service.

This, I have no doubt, contributes to the feelings of those who served in the Far East campaign that they are still the Forgotten Army.

Marlborough veterans should, however, take comfort from the fact that their ceremony was reported, albeit consigned to page 19 of the Devizes edition of your normally excellent publication.

You reported that VJ Day was marked in Devizes by the rededication of a YMCA war memorial, on Monday August 15, the 60th anniversary of that momentous occasion.

Fortuitous though it was that this ceremony took place on such a special date, this particular ceremony was not intended to mark VJ Day.

Jim Thorpe, whose sterling efforts brought this stone to prominence, said as much at the ceremony.

I have to wonder what those veterans who were at the war memorial in Long Street on Sunday August 14 are thinking, having been ignored by omission in their marking of this anniversary. Lest we forget?
