A MOURNING duck whose mate was killed by a motorist, refused to leave its dead companion's side and had to be removed by police from a busy road.
The male mallard is believed to have been run over accidentally by an articulated lorry on April 9 in Estcourt Street.
PC Adam Hall of Devizes police, said: It was so sad to see. I understand mallards are faithful for life to their mates, and she just did not want to leave her partner.
Police had been on patrol near the Crammer in the early hours of Monday when they saw the distressed duck in the middle of the road.
They eventually caught the duck in a box before returning her to the Crammer.
PC Hall said: We urge drivers to cut their speed.
