I WAS sorry to read your editorial last week about the new Abbeyfield School in Chippenham.
Your editorial refers to idle threats and pawns in a game. Nothing can be further from the truth.
It was also inaccurate to suggest that children would be in temporary accommodation at Hardenhuish School when a brand new building will be complete and within budget for September 2000.
County councillors are working hard to use the Private Finance Initiative to provide what no other means can provide three new schools at Abbeyfield, Malmesbury and Wootton Bassett.
This is a massive school project and inevitably involves hard bargaining, led by Peter Chalke, as leader of the council, to get a price that is fair for the taxpayer.
I am delighted to say that we are working with the contractor, White Horse Education Partnership, towards an early start on site so that Abbeyfield School will be ready for use by children in September 2001.
