A FANTASTIC response by Evening Advertiser readers has saved the town's Poppy Appeal from disaster.

More than 20 different individuals and organisations have answered a cry for help and the appeal's immediate future is now secure.

The Swindon paper reported how Alan Baker faced a race against time to prevent Swindon being without poppies this year.

Mr Baker, who has organised the town's annual poppy appeal for the past 10 years, had less than a week to find a new home to store thousands of poppies, collecting tins and wreaths.

However, Adver readers responded in terrific numbers, and Mr Baker has actually found himself spoilt for choice.

I think we have turned a possible Dunkirk into a D-Day," he said. " I am absolutely ecstatic. I have had everything offered from a garage to space in a supermarket.

Mr Baker, who served in the Royal Navy and later the Territorial Army, is moving into his new 'home' today after accepting an offer from Mark Farrow, regional manager of the Lok'n Store business, based at Rushy Platt, off Wootton Bassett Road.

Although Mr Baker, 64, of Bathampton Street in the Railway Village, has an open ended invitation to stay in his present home, he is still looking for a long term base.
