RETIRED vet Robert Cooper has been banned from driving for two years after being involved in a four-car smash while over the limit.

The 53-year-old was more than two-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit when he was involved in the pile-up in Old Town.

Di Walker, prosecuting, told magistrates that Cooper turned his Range Rover into Springfield Road from Croft Road shortly after 9pm on Tuesday, July 4, and collided with some traffic cones.

The vehicle then veered into another car which was waiting in traffic before hitting a second vehicle. She said Cooper's Range Rover then struck a parked car before smashing into a brick wall.

Police arrested Cooper, of West Leaze, Mill Lane at the scene. A breath test showed he had 89mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath the legal limit is 35.

The next day he pleaded guilty to drink-driving and driving without due care and attention.

Tony Nowogrodzki, defending, said his client had been forced to retire early after he was diagnosed as suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome.

Magistrates banned Cooper from the road for two years and fined him £360 for drink driving, £90 for careless driving and ordered him to pay £55 towards the costs of the prosecution.
