PUPILS' achievements were honoured at a presentation evening held by Matravers School, Westbury, on Wednesday.

The evening began with an introduction by John Clegg, chairman of governors at the school.

Headteacher Nigel Gilhespy delivered a review of the year and said: "What an amazingly significant one it has been when so many of our aspirations, hopes and dreams have become a reality".

Matravers has seen many improvements to facilities during this year. The opening of the new arts and drama block was celebrated in style on October 18 with an evening's entertainment provided by pupils and staff. Guests were also shown around the new textiles room, laboratories, computer room and newly refurbished learning support classrooms.

A building dating back to 1870 now provides a centre for the sixth form which was established at the school for the first time this year.

Matravers can also celebrate the academic success of its GCSE students who hit the school's target figure of 53 per cent gaining five or more A*C grades.

This year has also seen many sporting achievements by pupils. The school now has 14 area athletics champions.

Matravers has been shortlisted for arts college status and is waiting for the Department for Education and Employment's decision to be announced at the end of this month.

Mr Gilhespy's review was complemented by video footage of school activities and talks given by staff members and pupils.

There were also performances by the school choir and orchestra and a display of Irish dancing. Mark Curtis, Gary Hall and Calvin Stewart performed Hendrix's Purple Haze and James Finbow played a piano solo.

The achievement awards were presented to outstanding pupils by Bob Wolfson, chief education officer. A full list of prizewinners will appear in next week's Wiltshire Times.
