The Wilts Senior Cup first round tie between Chiseldon Southbrook and Cricklade eventually got underway at the sixth attempt, the match being switched to Cricklade Town's ground.

Cricklade groundsman Neil Wixey worked wonders on the Cricklade pitch to get the tie played and both sides adapted to the heavy conditions well.

Chiseldon Southbrook had the edge for most of the 90 minutes, but ended up losing 3-1.

The game was marred by an injury to Cricklade's Stephen Reade who was taken to hospital with a broken ankle after half an hour.

Cricklade got off to a great start. A corner by Ian Ross after just two minutes was headed into the net by Steve Willie. Chiseldon Southbrook fought back and then had the better of the half until ten minutes before the break when Ian Ross broke down the right and his cross was scrambled into the net by Steve Avenall.

Five minutes later Southbrook were back in the game when an excellent 20-yard effort by Steve Thomas hit the underside of the bar and bounced over the line.

After the break Southbrook had plenty of possession and had several chances before a cross from Toby Clarke was headed in by Darren King to make it 3-1 for Cricklade.

The visitors continued to push forward and Steve Maggs in the Cricklade goal made a series of good saves to ensure his side's passage into the second round.

Cricklade boss Alan Clarke said: "We're all glad to get the tie over. We can now concentrate on our league fixtures. I thought Chiseldon Southbrook played well and had the edge, but it's goals that count."

A disappointed Chiseldon manager Chris Petchick said: "We should have won. We had plenty of possession, but just failed to score."
