VILLAGERS joined children at Kington St Michael CoE Primary School, near Chippenham, to witness the blessing of a cross.

Children sang a song and also took part in the short service.

The hand carved solid oak cross was created by Frank Silver from Radstock, and commissioned by the parochial church council for the church of St Michael and All Angels. The cross standing five foot high on a stone plinth was set up on a grass island with three trees in front of the school.

The project was part of the Millennium celebrations. Headteacher Peter Havranek said: "We wanted something to show we are a church school."

The project was launched two years ago when an Ofsted report highlighted the need for the school to have a visible symbol of its Christian connection.

The parochial church council decided to make the school a gift of the £500 cross.

"The Christian ethos is very important. We place great importance on caring and sharing," said Mr Havranek. "That element of our education is almost as important as the academic element."

He said the children loved the new cross. "People like to go and touch it," he said.
