ROY EVANS has warned his new chairman that he cannot hope to secure success without any 'spending money'.

Town's director of football will sit down with Willie Carson today and seek assurances that his new chairman has both the ambition and the financial clout to take the club forward.

The new board of directors saw their era get off to a winning start as Town overcame Hereford United 3-2 in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Victory earned the club a potentially money-spinning tie at Manchester City but Evans wants assurances about more regular sources of income.

He said: "I've said 'hello' if you like but I've not had chance to sit down and really talk about things.

"I want to hear that there's financial backing for the club.

"You can only work for so long without spending money and you cannot work on a shoestring forever."

Evans said he had been warned by the previous regime when he arrived at the club that funds would not be available until after Christmas.

However, that was the Donegan era.

Evans wants to know how Willie Carson will take the club onwards and upwards.

As for his own future, Evans will not be drawn. But he is unlikely to turn his back on the club before the new board is given a chance to sell him its vision of the future.

As for Carson, he is delighted to be in the chairman's seat.

It was all smiles after victory over Hereford and he hoped the fans who had enjoyed a classic cup encounter would come back for more.

He said: "Hopefully we can get some good crowds for the rest of the season and by turning up they can help get us out of this hole we're in.

"The supporters coming through the gate is important. We will be looking at other ways of getting finances into the club of course but the best of doing that is to win games on the pitch."

Carson remains cautious about 'happily ever after' predictions.

"We've got the sticky plaster out and hopefully it'll hold.

He said: "When you get on a horse you don't always know if you're going to win. But you know that if you're participating then you're in with a chance.

"A good start, like we had against Hereford, then you never know."

As well as sitting down with Roy Evans to discuss playing matters, the new board is also expected to set up a meeting with Swindon Borough Council this week.

The council is anxious for the club to get its rent payments back on track with around £170,000 still owed.

Town's reserves are back in action this week with a trip to Luton Town on Wednesday afternoon (2pm).
