THE cold weather over the weekend affected most of the weights and the fish that were caught were in pockets, causing patchy results.

One fish however, that can be relied on to show on our rivers is the chub, where one can normally get a wrap-round using larger baits such as cheese, bread, luncheon meat and, in coloured river conditions, lobworm.

Nick Cheeseman used a loafer float, using bread as bait, to catch some late chub in Cloverleaf's match held at Rushy and walked away with a win with 11-12-0.

Turning up late, Derrick Hillier had a prime peg (No 1) in the weir drawn for him and took second place with two bream for 9-12-0.

Third was Bob Fletcher (6lb) and sections were won by Mick Harvey (3-14-0) and Phil McKay (5-0-8).

Weights were poor in the Isis AC Xmas Pairs match at Sutton Benger, where Richard Upko's win with a 4-12-0 weight ensured victory with his partner Brian Webb in the Pairs event. Second individual was John Garner (4-4-0) and third was John Merchant (2-12-0).

Wootton Bassett AC results of J Skull Trophy on Bassett Lake: 1. Bill Ockwell, 3-14-8 (tench and roach); 2. Kevin Strange, 3-8-0 (all roach); 3. Sid Webb, 3-6-8 (all roach); 4. Terry Strange, 3-6-0 (all roach).

The club has continued its stocking program with 1,000 small bream going in the canal at Wootton Bassett, and the lake received 250 small bream, 200 small tench and 400 crisians.

THE prolific Buscot Lake near Faringdon was greatly affected by the cold conditions and only three anglers of the 20 who fished caught.

John Jarman won with a 6-11-0 catch of skimmers and roach, followed by Colin Dunn with 4-6-0. The only other to weigh was Graham Cooper with just 131/2 ounces.

FISH were a premium in the Haydon Street AS Frank Gardner Memorial at Hannington where Pete Homerston needed just one chub of 2lb to win over Roger Giles with one 'puppy' of 1-5-0, and third was Mick Rozier with 14oz.

Ivy House Lakes match results: Wednesday, December 5: 1. Elick Payne (peg 41) 43-4-0; 2. Pete Byrne (peg 43) 28-3-0; 3. Simon Collins (peg 21) 22-13-0. Friday Veterans: 1. Robin Cope (peg 33) 7-2-0; 2. Simon Jones (peg 13) 4-9-0 to include a 21/2lb roach; 3. Tony Menham (peg 22) 3-6-0. Saturday, December 8: 1. Elick Payne (peg 47) 38-0-0 (£200 bonus peg); 2. Ray Russell (peg 45) 32-0-0; 3. Paul Connor (peg 33) 19-15-0.
