PEOPLE in Beech Avenue have pledged to step up a campaign for improved safety measures after a driver was hurt in an accident near their homes.
They say chicanes aimed at making the road safer are actually increasing the chances of accidents happening.
A woman was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital on Thursday after two cars were involved in a head-on collision.
She was driving a Fiat Punto that was in collision with a Ford Escort. The driver of the Escort is believed to have run from the scene.
Swindon councillor Maureen Caton (Lab, Moredon) called for a review of the road's safety after Thursday's accident.
And today her call was echoed by people in the street.
Bus driver Adrian Mears, 39, said: "We have wanted these chicanes out for a long time because there have been a lot of near misses.
"But Swindon Council has told us there have not been any major accidents.
"They have taken a metre off some of the chicanes. This accident happened on the main one where there are always accidents happening."
Coun Caton said she supported the use of traffic calming measures, but that a re-design was needed.
Police are still appealing for witnesses to the accident.
They are asked to call Swindon 528111.
