SERGEANT Julie Wiles will be showing the boys how it's done when she takes to the skies at the forthcoming Kemble Heli-Air Day.

As the first British female military display pilot, she's already in a class of her own and will prove the point at Kemble on Sunday, September 1.

Julie, 33, is member of the spectacular Army Air Corps Blue Eagles display team, which is widely recognised as the helicopter equivalent of the Red Arrows.

After initially training as a nurse with the Royal Army Nursing Corps and serving as a combat medical technician during the Gulf War, she decided to follow in her father's footsteps and qualified as an Army pilot in June 1997.

She has since served as a Gazelle Pilot with 1 Regiment Army Air Corps at Gutersloh in Germany and more recently, having transferred to the AAC, with 5 Regiment in Northern Ireland.

Julie's father was a member of the AAC for many years.

Kemble event manager Glen Moreman said: "The Blue Eagles are a fantastic team and I'm sure Julie will prove a real show-stopper with her aerial skills.

"We're delighted to welcome the team and all the other display pilots for what I'm sure will prove to be a really great show."

Flying displays by helicopters including the Westland Wasp and Bell 47, will be supported by an impressive static display on the ground featuring everything from a Wasp to the mighty Chinook.

Topping the highlights in the flying display will be the Army Air Corps Blue Eagles display team made up of Army helicopter pilots from Middle Wallop airfield near Andover.

Also displaying will be an example of the Royal Air Force's newest helicopter, the EH101 Merlin. Built by Westland in Yeovil. This large helicopter will be performing stunts that belie this large helicopter's size.

A small static display of helicopters will also feature with a number of RAF helicopters heading the line-up. Helicopter pleasure flights will also be flying during the day.

More than 10,000 people attended the airfield's flagship event the Kemble Air Day in June and Glen is expecting people to travel from all over the country for the Heli-Air Day, which is the only event of its kind in the UK.

Admission is £10 per person (under 15s free if accompanied by an adult).

Gates open at 10am and there will be a funfair and all the usual trade stands.
