WESTLECOT men have qualified for the quarter-finals in the Wessex League play-offs.

Previous winners of the league play-offs title they beat Midglos 85-72 in their opening match a last 16 game.

Westlecot took the honours on three of the four rinks against Midglos to register a 13 shot success over the North Region group winners.

At home Ian Jefferies' rink were 6-8 down at 10 ends but then turned up the power winning the next 11 ends to cruise to a 25-8 success.

In sharp contrast on the next green Mark Wadsworth's rink struggled throughout.

They were 1-7 down at five ends but had fought back to 12-14 after 16 but lost the next five to go down by 12 shots.

At Brockworth the rink skipped by Dave Snell, replacing the unavailable Neil Smith, were always in command. They led 12-8 at halfway and eventually won by seven shots.

Alongside the quartet skipped by youngster Neil Hope were involved in a high scoring game. Several times they opened up a reasonable lead only to be pegged back the match being settled with a single to Hope on the last end.

Westlecot will now face Thornbury in the quarter-finals on Sunday, (10am).

Rink 1: John Thomas, Mike Shawyer, Reg and Mark Wadsworth lost to Graham Griffiths 12-24.

Rink 2: Kevin Embling, Dave Matthews, Martin Hope and Ian Jefferies beat Rob Griffiths 25-8.

Away

Rink 1: Bob George, Jeff Nichols, John Williamson and Dave Snell beat Stuart Hodges 23-16 (20 ends only); Rink 2: Barry Sictorness, Mike Hall, Dave Vowles and Neil Hope beat Richie Purser 25-24.

ON Saturday, Westlecot bid for a place in the last 16 of the Famous Grouse Top Ten competition.

They meet Victoria (Street) in the regional play-off final (10am).

A place in the finals to be held at Darlington over the four-day Easter period awaits the winners.
