SWINDON Town Ladies recorded their best result of the season when they beat fourth-placed Clevedon Town 5-0 in a South West Combination League fixture played at Aldbourne.

The visitors kicked off and Town keeper Wendy Davis was soon in action saving Alison Hughes' free kick.

The Town took time to settle and Hayley Sprules found Lucy Bailey wide on the Town's right but her cross was cut out by Helen Cunningham in the centre of the Clevedon defence.

Kerry Weaver caught the Town's defence with a quick throw in but Charlie Grimes' 25-yard shot was just too high.

Clevedon were having the better of the play and good work from Clare Wheeler prevented the visitors from taking an early lead.

In the 22nd minute against the run of play the Town went ahead. Fiona Baldwin's throw in put Nikki Watts clear and the Town youngster cut in from the left before squaring the ball to Kim Reeves, who knocked the ball into the net from close range.

Clevedon continued to cause the Town's defence problems and Michele Brown did well to block Grimes' goalbound shot.

Sprules linked up well with Bailey down the Town's right before finding Rich, whose overhead kick was just too high.

Katie Reid made a strong run down the Clevedon right but Laura Stallard was well-placed to cut out the final through ball.

In the 39th minute the Town increased their lead. Sprules won possession in midfield before finding Bailey on the edge of the penalty area. The Town forward played the ball across to Watts, who calmly tucked it into the far corner of the net.

The Town kicked off in the second half and scored twice within the first three minutes. Reeves found Bailey free on the Town's right and her cross found Rich unmarked, and she sidefooted the ball into the net. Good work by Louise Corcoran then opened up the Clevedon defence for Bailey to run clear and score.

The Town were now in control and both Bailey and Rich went close. The Town defence were keeping a tight rein on the Clevedon forwards and their attacks were breaking down to midfield.

Reeves picked up a loose pass in midfield and dropped the ball over the Clevedon defence for Bailey to run onto but visiting keeper Kathy Copley was quickly off her line to clear.

Elaine Basterfield hit a long ball forward but Town keeper Davis beat the onrushing forwards to the ball and cleared.

In the 74th minute Rich's corner was cleared as far as Julie Selway, whose 30-yard shot left the keeper stranded to take the Town's total to five. Clevedon battled to the end but were rarely able to trouble the Town's defence.
