MARCH 12: PEACE campaigners are holding an open meeting to decide how Swindon will respond should war break out.

Swindon Stop the War Coalition will host the meeting at the Friends Meeting House in Eastcott Hill at 7.30pm tomorrow.

Secretary Andy Newman said: "People will want to protest in many ways.

"I know that some are planning a dignified wreath-laying at the war memorial, which is completely appropriate in respect for those of all sides who may perish in a conflict.

"I expect some other people will be very angry if Tony Blair sends British troops into action against the wishes of the population.

"I am sure that there will be non-violent civil disobedience in the same tradition as Ghandi or the Suffragettes, although we have no specific plans.

"Our group is democratic, and we welcome the diversity. Everyone is welcome to put forward their own plans or ideas, and also express their views if they disagree with some of the other suggestions."

Swindon Stop the War Coalition is asking people to assemble at 1pm and again at 6pm at the war memorial in Regent Circus in the event of war.

The town is sending seven delegates to a People's Coalition for Peace that will be convened in Central Hall, Westminster, opposite the Houses of Parliament.

The People's Assembly will have 2,400 delegates and will be discussing he future strategy of the anti-war movement.
