WITH reference to the letter from Mr Brian Burrows in February 21 edition of the Evening Advertiser entitled 'The wrong time of year for dredging' in relation to the desilting works taking place at Shaftesbury Lake, I have to take issue with Mr Burrows concerning his comments over the timing of the work.

The rangers have played a major role within the project team together with representatives from the angling club, the Swindon Fisheries Management Group and the Environment Agency. We also sought the opinion of English Nature and the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust before any works commenced. These agencies were satisfied with our timetable of work which started in late September. Unfortunately, due to exceptionally wet weather conditions throughout this period progress has been limited. However, dry weather in recent weeks has allowed much greater progress to be made and the work will be completed within a few weeks.

The swans, as mentioned in Mr Burrows' letter, were removed by Sue Hulbert to the Swan Sanctuary and will be returned. Sue is also a ranger.

In future I would suggest Mr Burrows makes sure of his facts before making comments of this nature. Both Mr Short and myself will be happy to meet Mr Burrows and discuss any concerns.
