DR MARTENS WESTERN DIVISION: SUPERMARINE manager Ray Baverstock could only watch on in despair as his side spurned a golden opportunity to boost their Western Division survival hopes on Saturday 8 March.

Baverstock's band of battlers led in-form Redditch 1-0 at half time, but the rampant hosts roared back after the interval to win 2-1 and send Marine back down the M5 empty handed.

The Wiltshire visitors had taken the game to Redditch from the off and were ahead after just 10 minutes when the unmarked Steve Bennett converted a right-wing cross from six yards.

Marine seemed happy to defend their lead for the remainder of the half and they did so comfortably despite strong penalty appeals when goalkeeper Elliott Jackson appeared to upend Richard Softly.

The underdogs were happy to soak up the pressure again after the break, but the one-way traffic proved too much to handle. Softly and Richard Field both struck the woodwork before Softly was again brought down in the box and Matt Hall buried the spot kick on the hour.

The killer blow arrived 10 minutes from time when Narveed Arshad headed home Hall's corner.

Baverstock was desperately disappointed to see more crucial points escape but the Marine boss still believes his troops can escape the drop.

He said: "In the first-half we did very well, created a few chances and got our noses in front. Second half it was like the alamo.

"We were good value for 1-0 but we needed the second goal and it was disappointing to give two goals away.

"We've just got to settle down and look to get something next week against Weston. I'm still very positive we can get out of it."

Marine remain nine points adrift of safety markers Rocester with ten games left to play.
