THIS was the scene when more than 500 staff from Motorola held cards aloft to create a huge red nose as part of a fundraising bid for Comic Relief.

It was one of scores of events across the town to raise money for the BBC charity event, which reaches its climax today.

Staff took 15 minutes out of their day to stand with colleagues in the cold just outside the main building in Groundwell for the photo shoot.

Dyfed Evans, human resources director at Motorola in Swindon, said: "Every-body here loves to help with Comic Relief.

"We have had some difficult times here at the company over the last few years but now we are trying to put the fun back into the job."

Staff each bought a piece of card and raised around £1,250, a figure that was then matched by the company, bringing in £2,500 for Comic Relief.

Grazyna Kaja, one of the organisers of the event, said: "This is Motorola's main event for Comic Relief. All the staff have been really supportive and giving new ideas for the day and it is a very good cause."

Elsewhere in Swindon, Pamela Sloggett, 42, a teaching assistant at Shaw Ridge Primary, had her hair cropped in aid of the charity.

Speaking prior to the event, she said: "I am not the sort to person who would usually do this even when I was a teenager. But I suppose once you commit to doing it, there is no turning back."

"All the children have been very supportive, particularly the boys and I am sure that they'll cheer me on when the time comes."

"It is a wonderful cause, and when you consider that there are children out there who have no hair because of illness or stress, I am healthy and losing my hair is a small price to pay to help these people."

Staff from the headquarters of the Nationwide Building Society tested muscles many never knew they had when they joined 50 RAF personnel to pull a 46-ton Hercules aircraft the equivalent to each of the 100 people involved pulling a small car down the runway at RAF Lyneham yesterday.

Jackie Lawrence, spokeswoman for Nationwide, was one of the crew hauling the aircraft.

She said: "It was fantastic seeing the aircraft with a bright red nose. We were all given a quick safety briefing then we all strapped ourselves together."

"We wanted to have a go at beating the record of one minute 20 seconds, but we all thought that three minutes was good going for us."

Every 10 metres of the pull was marked by a Red Nose.

Soldiers from the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment deployed around the traffic lights in Regent Circus near Swindon College to provide a windscreen wash service for drivers waiting at the lights in return for a small donation to Comic Relief.

Sgt John Reynolds said: "We have had a cracking response from people in Swin-don.

"We have raised more than £1,000 from people here and in Gloucester; we hope to double this by the end of the day."

Hairdresser Julian Clarke dyed Swindon mayor Stan Pajak's hair red.

Coun Pajak said: "I am glad to have been able to bring something bright into this currently gloomy world. I have no doubt the hair will raise a few eyebrows at the council meeting on Friday evening but that will help towards the fundraising."
