CHILDREN at Ridgeway School in Wroughton learned the importance of fair trade when a banana grower gave an assembly.

About 250 11 to 12-year-olds listened to Denise Sutherland, who grows bananas in the Windward Isles.

And two students illustrated their understanding by winning a poster competition showing what fair trade means.

Jessica Fiore, 11, said: "I never really thought that much about where our food comes from. I think Fair Trade is a good idea because it means that the people who do all the hard work are able to earn a proper wage."

And fellow winner James Crockett, 12, said: "It was really interesting. I didn't realise how much hard work goes into getting things like bananas. A lot of people just think they come from the supermarket."

Teacher Rosemary Cairns said: "Paying just a few pence more for fair trade food like bananas, coffee and chocolate could make the difference between a child sitting on a chair or the floor in school."
