Adam JonesBOOZY street fighter Adam Jones could be going to prison for his part in an alcohol-fuelled town centre scuffle.

Jones, 20, punched a man repeatedly in the head before police arrested him during a post-pub brawl in Chippenham town centre.

In a second incident magistrates in Chippenham heard how Jones fled from police officers when they caught him in Market Place with an illegal lock-knife stored in his pocket.

Jones faces the prospect of a prison sentence after pleading guilty to a public order charge, possession of an offensive weapon and drug possession at the court hearing on Monday.

Prosecutor Rhys Davies said the gang clash was sparked on January 18 when a group of 16 to 21-year-olds left the Rose and Crown pub.

Minutes later the group ran into a second gang by the Buttercross monument in Market Place. Mr Davies said members of the first group tried to walk away when the second gang, including Jones, mentioned drugs.

One member of the second gang chased the scattering late-night revellers to the town bridge where a punch-up began. Jones got involved in the violent scrap battering a man in the face several times.

Mr Davies said Jones was arrested when police officers were called in to diffuse the violence.

During an interview he admitted to officers he downed a bottle of Vodka, tequila shots and beer during the evening.

Police officers also found 2.3 grams of cannabis in his possession.

On March 3, Jones was stopped by police officers in Market Place.

Emptying his pockets to reveal a lock-knife, the 20-year-old fled from officers before they could question him.

When he got back to his mother's house he broke down in tears and confessed to possessing a knife in public.

Defence solicitor Paul Orton said magistrates would want to know more about Jones because of his "substantial list" of previous convictions.

Jones will also be punished for breaching a conditional discharge handed to him by magistrates in April 2002 for a drugs offence.

Magistrates adjourned the case until April 3 for an all-options pre-sentence report to be prepared. The report will include the option of a custodial sentence.

A second person has been charged in connection with the gang attack while police are hunting for a third suspect.

Eleanor Staples, 28, of Daniell Drive, Pewsham, denied a public order charge on Monday and the case was put off until April 30 for a pre-trial review.
