Swindon went into Comic Relief overdrive as hundreds of people raised money for charity.

The charity was set up 18 years ago and uses both comedy and laughter to get across the message about issues and problems that affect the lives of many people.

Comic Relief helps to fund and support charities, groups and organisations across the UK and Africa working to tackle poverty and social injustice.

Among the businesses working hard to fundraise on Friday were staff at Specsavers Opticians in Havelock Square.

Many turned out in bright red hair suitably glittered and with pipe cleaners.

Despite doubts that the price put on their locks wouldn't be raised, both dispensing assistant Gary Collins and lab technician Ben Hurwood had their heads shaved after staff put in more than £100.

Jackie Molesworth, practice manager at Specsavers said: "It's a wild day, and everyone has styled their hair in a mad way. You can tell that we are all professionals really."

Staff and children at the Trees Nursery in Old Town followed the big hair theme of Red Nose Day and added a twist by asking all staff and children to wear pyjamas for the day.

Kelly Loftus, a nurse at the nursery said: "Everyone is having a really fun day. All the children look really cute in their pyjamas and its really funny to watch. Red hair is all the rage too. When I was heading into work this morning with my wired hair and pyjamas, I got a few strange looks."

Meanwhile Shaw Judo Club students sported bright red hair while practicing the martial art yesterday evening.

Jayne Crowe, secretary of the Judo Club, said: "I don't think the hair will affect the way the children train, just as long as the dye doesn't stain their suits."

Gareth Howell, 31 had his hair shaved for Comic Relief at Swindon Lydiard Tax Office.

He said: "I was quite nervous and I didn't sleep too well the night before. I am pleased though, that we have managed to raise £280 just through my hair being cut."
