YOUR newspaper (EA May 5) reports 'chronic voter apathy' during the recent local elections, but no-one should be surprised.

The vitally important meeting of SBC (which I attended) to set this year's council tax resulted in a 15 per cent increase.

A lower tax would have resulted if four of our councillors had bothered to attend, to say nothing of the council member who chose to abstain from voting.

In the same edition of your paper you report the additional £200,000 in funding for extra council staff to pick up the mess left by litter louts who refuse to use bins provided.

A more positive approach would be to give this money to our local constabulary with a request that they stamp out this unsocial behaviour by putting a considerable number of litter louts before the Swindon magistrates, who should support their efforts with heavy fines.
