WOOTTON Bassett suffered a batting collapse as they fell 22 runs short of their adjusted target in a rain-affected match at Colwall on Saturday.

Luke Leech and Ian Lancaster both shone on their debuts for the away side, who won the toss and elected to field first in gloomy conditions.

Colwall began their innings well, but finished on 187-8 as former Purton bowler Lancaster and Lee Stevens took two and three wickets respectively.

In reply, Bassett openers Clive Chattell and Nick Yalden shared an unbeaten stand of 40 before rain halted the game for 20 minutes.

The Bassett target was adjusted to 161 off 43 overs as a result, but the break did the visitors few favours as Yalden were soon dismissed for 19 and Chattell followed after making 23.

Wicketkeeper Luke Leach came to the crease and made a fine 48.

But his dismissal spelt the beginning of the end for Bassett as they lost their final six wickets for a meagre 36 runs.

Vice captain Chattell was able to draw some positives from his side's first Gloucester and Wiltshire Division One outing of the season.

He said: "The bowling and fielding was superb and everyone gave 110 per cent.

"We knew we were a little light on the batting side, but thought 187 was a gettable target.

"It was disappointing to lose, but Luke Leach and Ian Lancaster did well on their debuts. We knew all about Luke's wicketkeeping, but he proved on Saturday that he can bat as well."

Wootton Bassett entertain local rivals Devizes on Saturday, start 1.30pm.

Said Chattell: "That is one of the many local derbies we have this year, along with Swindon and Goatacre.

"I think Devizes will do better this year than they did last.

"It will be a test for us."
