SWINDON tasted defeat in their opening game in the Glos/Wilts Division One against Winget, losing by four wickets.

It was an exciting finish as Wignet reached their target in the final over.

The day started badly for Swindon, having to start play with only 10 men after Richard Mason's car broke down.

Skipper Will Nicholls won the toss, in a game reduced to 46 overs because of the afternoon showers, and elected to bat.

Nichols and Brett Sydney-Smith began brightly, with the Swindon skipper in fine form.

The pair took the score past 50 before the Aussie fell for 25. Unfortunately this triggered a mini collapse with John Baden, Neil Patel and Matt Baker all falling cheaply, reducing Swindon to 85-4.

In came Paul Baden, who steadied the ship and put on a sixth-wicket stand of 100 with Nichols. Baden soon passed the 50 mark before Nicholls completed his century.

Despite another mini collapse at the end of the innings Swindon closed on 229.

After another weather-affected break, Winget started their reply, chasing a revised target of 185-5 from 37 overs.

Winget started strongly before Pete Stinchcombe removed two of their openers in successive deliveries.

Tom Fox also bowled well to deliver opening batsman Carter before James Tegg arrived at the crease and quickly scored his half century.

Nichols then struck twice to give Swindon some hope but Winget managed to continue their momentum, reaching the total with four wickets in hand.

Swindon 2nds defeated Redmarley by two wickets in their Division One clash at the County Ground.

The visitors were bowled out for 159, with South African Craig Henkel taking 5-34.

Despite a bright start, Swindon were made to fight hard for victory, reaching their target with only two balls to spare.
