SALISBURY Rugby Club's investment in its youth policy is beginning to pay dividends after the Castle Road outfit were crowned champions of the prestigious Lytchett Minster seven-a-side competition for the first time since 1993 when they were captained by Richard Hill who went on to play for England.

Salisbury's young team were undefeated in six games before they convincingly beat Liskeard & Looe 53-19 in the final.

The tournament, sponsored by the Badger Brewery, attracted sides from all over England and Wales, and the Salisbury supporters will have been heartened to see the players that will form the nucleus of next season's first team do so well.

Salisbury's Mini section annual presentation dinner saw awards given to the most improved player in each age group. Jack Richards won the under seven honour while the under eight award went to Stuart Strachan.

Jake Williams won the under nines with the under tens honour going to Daniel Stephens.

Sonny Dewfall picked up the under 11s accolade and Craig Davies collected the under 12s.

The presentations were made by David Wookey, the club's mini co-ordinator, first team player Tim Shipsey and Frazer McArdell of Bath and the Scottish Exiles under 16s.

Salisbury pair Sam Davenport and Phil Chesters combined to score the first try for Wiltshire Under 15s in their final game of the season, a 23-15 success over Dorset.
