SALISBURY Tennis Club's age group teams in the Hants and IOW Veterans League have made a flying start to the new season by winning all of their first six matches, with men and ladies notching three victories each.

Results have particularly pleased Phil Sutherland and Paul Donovan, who are leading the men's teams for the first time.

Sutherland's Over 45s made it two home wins out of two by adding Lee-on-Solent's scalp to that of Alverstoke.

Donovan's Over 55's were well pleased with a win on games from a tough opener at Southampton's David Lloyd club.

The Over 40 ladies team started with away wins at Alverstoke and Hale Gardens that included victory in four rubbers out of four for Zoe Chadderton. The Over 50 side opened with a home win over Swanmore helped by an unbeaten evening for Bridget Hamilton and Liz Robertson.

A win for Riverside's Over 40 ladies at Centre court, Basingstoke, boosted by four winning sets form Fiona Symonds and Freda Ings, was their club's only victory from the first four fixtures, but two of the three defeats were on a game count after sets finished all square. The Over 50 ladies, at Avenue, Havant had the rare experience of a match on grass.

Sarum League action brought home wins for the both Salisbury teams, against Winchester A and Alderbury A respectively, and victory in both opening matches for Riverside in the newly launched Sarum Under 16s League.

Boyd Brackstone of West Hants who beat Salisbury's Bill Herlihy 6-3, 7-6 in the final, won the Open Veteran Singles event, sponsored by Sole Obsession at Salisbury Tennis Club. Fourteen players took part. Salisbury's Alastair Allen lost 6-3, 6-1 to Mike Bottomley of Maidenhead in the final of the Bonus event for the first round losers.
