A VILLAGE primary school's May fair on Saturday is sure to go with a bang thanks to a special sausage named in its honour.

The Dauntsey Delight is being made by Bromham-based Sandridge Farm Bacon for the event being held at Dauntsey's Aided Primary School in West Lavington from 11am to 3pm.

Pupils from the school will be working up an appetite as they entertain the crowds with the traditional art of maypole dancing, the highlight of the fair.

The maypolers have won support from Wiltshire Traditions, an organisation set up to help preserve and promote the county's songs, customs and traditions.

Founder member Bob Berry, from Potterne, said: "By taking part in these old dances, the children will not only feel they are participating in an age-old custom that has been played out by countless people over many generations, but are helping to carry it forward for others to come."

Headteacher Jacqui Monckton said the children have enjoyed rising to the maypole challenge.

She said: "Their enthusiasm in learning this very old tradition has been a joy to see."

Actor George Baker, who lives in West Lavington, will open the fair.

Among other attractions at the fair will be visits from Wiltshire Constabulary.

Dog handler PC Philip Thom is taking along his young police dog, Max.

PC Adam Hall will also be entertaining youngsters with a remote-controlled police car called PC Bobby.

He is also offering to stamp postcodes on bicycles free of charge as a deterrent to thieves.
