TRADERS have complained about a Melksham hairdresser's call for action over a dangerous high pavement in the town.

Michael Clarke wants railings to be installed in Bank Street to stop people falling into the road and injuring themselves.

About 800 people signed a petition in support, and Wiltshire County Council agreed to consider the proposal.

But a handful of traders in the area have complained, questioning the need for railings. They are concerned about the possible loss of trade and delivery issues which the barriers may create.

Susan Foreman, of Amber Home Appliance Centre, said: "A great deal of our trade comes from passing traffic.

"If railings of any type were to be installed outside our premises this would cause us a very serious loss of passing trade.

"In addition, on a regular daily basis deliveries of heavy appliances are made at the front of the property."

Melksham town councillors have backed Mr Clarke's campaign but want full public consultation before any railings are erected.

Cllr Davina Griffin said: "I think we should write to Wiltshire County Council and say that we would be interested in the plans being displayed in the town hall so people can come and look at them.

"It is hard to comment on the plans until we actually see them."

Mr Clarke, of Clarkies Unisex Hairstyling, in Bath Road, said he was disappointed objections had been raised at this late stage.

He said: "No such objections were highlighted and addressed when the campaign was in operation. I still believe it is a true and worthwhile project and one that the council can be proud to have supported.

"It was an altruistic desire on my part, the belief that eventually there will be a tragedy along that area and everyone would feel remorse that it could have been averted."
