FOR all the versatility of a hatchback, plenty of drivers still like the tried and tested layout of the four-door saloon. That penchant for putting the boot into modern motors led SEAT to develop the Cordoba, a compact booted version of the Ibiza, the What Car? Car of the Year.

A high waistline, wedge-shape and wide tracks produce a very compact look, but the new Cordoba sporting four-door saloon is actually much bigger than its predecessor, delivering more interior space and greater passenger comfort.

Four doors, greater cabin space and a larger boot are just a few of its features, which also offers higher levels of safety, with anti-lock brakes and twin front airbags standard across the entire range.

Like the Ibiza, the new Cordoba uses SEAT's so-called Dynamic Steering Response, that combines suspension settings using stiffer shock absorbers and softer springs, low-profile tyres and an intelligent programme that alters levels of power steering assistance according to steering forces and vehicle speed.

The results are more precise handling, greater feedback and more secure steering feel.

Nine years after the launch of the original Cordoba, the newcomer's face is shared with the new Ibiza. Larger radiator air intakes, powerful headlamps set beneath smooth, streamlined, clear covers, and a flared bonnet, balance the muscular shape of the front wings and make the front end of the car appear lower.

The rear has a discreetly muscly look with a spoiler and third brake light integrated in the boot lid and tail light clusters housed beneath a transparent casing. Characteristic of new SEAT design are the deep, body colour bumpers and side protection mouldings.

Inside, the instrument panel emerges from behind a chunky three-spoke steering wheel, which is adjustable for height and reach.

The dashboard, with its dark anthracite grey finish, is constructed using a new mould technology.

It has an invisible joint for the passenger airbag cover, pre-formed using a micro-perforating laser, which renders traditional metal hinges unnecessary.

All controls are within easy reach and the air conditioning and radio/CD controls are located on the central console.

There is plenty of storage in the cabin with door pockets, glovebox, central

console and under-dash cubby holes for small items and handbooks.

There is also a useful hidden storage box under the driver1s seat and a map pocket in the front seatback. Other comfort features include a central sunvisor over the rear view mirror, cup holder, pollen filter, air re-circulation feature and interior light with delay.

The three engines powering the new Cordoba include one petrol and two diesel engines, providing power outputs ranging from 75 to 130 horsepower and two finish levels, S and SE.

All models feature anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger airbag, electro-hydraulic power steering, electric front windows, remote controlled central locking and single CD/radio player as standard.

The SE version is distinguished by the addition of double headlamps, foglamps integrated in the lower front valance, a chrome surround to the central portion of the radiator grille and sporty 15-inch alloy wheels.
