THE PARENTS of a train driver killed in the Selby rail crash believe the motorist jailed for causing the disaster is 'living the life of Riley'.

Jailed Gary Hart, 38, was walking free in his Lincolnshire home village just 18 months into a five-year prison sentence, outraging relatives of the 10 victims who perished in the high-speed rail smash.

Hart, who fell asleep at the wheel of his Land Rover and careered into the path of an oncoming GNER express train in North Yorkshire two years ago, has so far served just eight weeks for every person killed in the tragedy.

Furious Leslie and Pat Dunn, of Pitman Avenue, Trowbridge, whose 39-year-old son Stephen was driving the 1,800 coal train that ploughed into the stricken express train, said Hart was making a mockery of the justice system.

The couple are also livid over rumours sick Hart is painting portraits of rail crashes from his prison cell.

Mrs Dunn, 64, said: "It is trips to the seaside and visits to the family for him but it's painful memories for us Stephen can't take his two sons out.

"It's the life of Riley. Perhaps they would like to give him his driving licence back before the year is up.

"He hasn't even served two months for each person he helped kill. It is scandalous. There is no compassion in our hearts for him.

"You can tell he has not accepted his guilt. He has no shame. What sort of punishment has he had?

"I don't think we had better run into him. It's a good job we don't know him."

Father Leslie, 72, said the happy memories of their eldest son helped them deal with the miscarriage of justice happening before their eyes.

Revealing her feelings over rumours Hart is painting sick train crash pictures in jail Mrs Dunn said: "It makes me feel sick."

Hart spent his day-release from North Sea Camp prison walking in a quiet Lincolnshire village with family and friends. A Sunday tabloid snapped the convicted building boss enjoying his first taste of freedom.

It is only three months since three top London judges rejected Hart's appeal bid at the High Court.

It was revealed in court how married Hart was sending explicit messages to his internet lover Kristeen Panter the night before the crash.

His Land Rover ploughed off the M62 onto the East Coast railway line at Great Heck just after 6am.

Minutes later a GNER Newcastle to Kings Cross express train careered into the vehicle, causing it to derail and plough into Mr Dunn's fully-laden Freightliner coal train travelling in the opposite direction. Labelling Hart as "arrogant" at Leeds Crown Court Mr Justice Mackay said the rail tragedy was the "worst driving-related incident in the UK in recent years".
