A group of travellers in Minety has been criticised for flouting planning laws.
Parish council chairman David Brown believes an unwanted precedent will be set if the group is allowed to stay in the camp, which it built more than a week ago on land the council owns.
He said: "There are planning rules and people should abide by them. This sort of behaviour needs nipping in the bud.
"It was like a military operation when they moved in. They have brought lorry load after lorry load in and set up piping.
"Residents are starting to feel hostile because they are taking the law into their own hands. It's setting a precedent for other travelling groups.
"I hope North Wilts council will be able to sort it out."
