FAMILIES of the victims of mesothelioma the so-called Swindon Disease and sufferers themselves could soon benefit from a specialist support group.

Swindon mayor Derek Benfield (Lab, Covingham and Nythe) and Brigitte Chandler of Regent Circus solicitors Thring Townsend have met informally to discuss plans to set up a charitable trust.

The trust would be an umbrella organisation to raise funds and the profile of the support group and promote links between the loved ones of those who have died from asbestosis.

It could even help fund the production of informative literature on the disease and organise days out and luncheon meetings.

Coun Benfield said: "We're looking to make life better for people by setting up a social group for families of people who have died from mesothelioma and enabling them to get in touch with other people through a kind of support group.

"We could even try to publish a booklet of information on the subject and get consultants to give lectures in the council chamber so people can better understand it."

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer of the respiratory system.

Coun Benfield, himself a former apprentice at the Great Western Railway works in Churchward, has already donated £500 of his own money towards the project, which could get off the ground by the end of the year.

He added: "I've lost some very dear friends because of this disease. This project is just a vision at the moment, but mesothelioma is something that has touched the lives of so many people across Swindon.

"I was an apprentice engineering fitter and turner and a lot of people used to roll asbestos up and throw it about because we didn't know any different."

In April the Memorial Garden a tribute to the victims of mesothelioma and largely paid for by readers of the Evening Advertiser following an appeal was opened in Queen's Park by former mayor Stan Pajak (Lib Dem, Eastcott).

Many have visited the garden for quiet contemplation and reflection amid the scented flowers and water fountain, which symbolises everlasting life.

Millions of pounds have already been paid out to the families of victims of meso- thelioma and Ms Chandler continues to handle claims against British Rail, now known as BRB (Residuary Ltd) for negligence.
