I WAS interested to read 'People speak out over traffic issues' in the Evening Advertiser (Aug 12) and pleased to see Swindon Borough Council has given the opportunity for comment on its road schemes.

However, none of the more controversial measures, such as speed humps, would be necessary were it not for the foolhardy, mindless idiots who, in this "I do what I want" society, continue to drive haphazardly above the set limits.

Opponents of the Covingham Drive Scheme have suggested an enforced 20mph limit.

Highdown Way at St Andrews Ridge has an enforced 20mph limit but this is ignored by the majority of drivers despite the presence of many young children around the playground, shops and Leapfrog Nursery.

Some may be forgiven as both 20mph signs adjacent to the Jovial Monk Pub have been removed and never replaced, but as it is often the same vehicles causing danger, often driving the wrong way around roundabouts (presumably to get home a nanosecond earlier or save the energy of turning the steering wheel another five degrees) I can only assume it is local residents who should know better.

Perhaps these are the same people who sit in lengthy traffic queues as I speed past on the park and ride bus on the way to the town centre and who I lip read to say "Look that park and ride is a waste of money. There's only one person on it."
